I'm thinking about getting my niece a 10 gallon fish tank for Christmas. She's nine years old, and is interested in marine biology. The tank will be freshwater, and I'm looking for a good set of fish that she could have. I'm looking for beauty and peacefulness. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Neon tetras are nice fish. They stay really small, are peaceful & very colorful. They look great when they school. I would say get 3-4 of them with another small fish.

Thanks for your input. I'm looking around on LiveAquaria right now.. Do you think a small rainbow shark would be too aggressive?

neons should be in groups of at least 6 ..

avoid any type of shark especially a rainbow in a 10 gal.

Celestial pearl danios would go well with the tetras as a compliment/offset in colour

would suggest an ancistrus pleco as well stays smaller for the tank size also called bristle nose, bushy nose etc..

try glofish; they're just zebra danios with red, green, and orange pigments; just make sure their legal in ur state lol. Sounds weird but they are illegal in some places

Ok, six neons then. I knew they were supposed to be kept in groups, but I've never heard of a specific number...6 would not be a problem in a 10g.

Zebra Danios are another good option.

Endlers are a good choice. Stay small, colorful, Entertaining to watch and you can have a lot of them in a small tank.
