Dowtish's 120 gallon DSPS Tank
  • 120 gallon Oceanic Tec Tank- SPS dominate. Custom Steel Stand with DIY 40B sump.

    The Setup:

This tank was an upgrade build from my 85 gallon bowfront. I bought my first home and upgraded at the same time. I got the tank used from a friend as Oceanic no longer makes these specific tanks, plus I am somewhat of a budget reefer. 90% of all the equipment was bought used and spaced out over time. The tank is a standard 4x2x2 120 gallon with starphire glass, center overflow and eurobracing. Custom Steel Stand- 40" Tall welded by a friend and then powder coated black with adjustable feet. DIY 40B sump- Heavy Skimming, small fuge, EcoBak pellets and GAC.

    Equipment:

Lighting: Giesmann Spectra Fixture- 2 400W MH Radiums- 4 T5's- 3 ATI blue+ 1 KZ Fiji Purple- 48" Current Trulumen all blue LED strip for supplementation.

    Flow: 2 Ecotech MP40s and 1 Tunze 6155.

    Skimmer: SWC 230 Cone

Return Pump: DC Speedwave 10000- Setup through a manifold- powers the tank, 2 reactors, and a chiller.

Avast MR5 Reactor with bio-pellet nozzle mod- contains ecobak
    Synery Reef Reactor- GAC
    Avast Kalk Stirrer

BRS Dosing pumps: 2 1.1ml for BRS 2 part and 1 50ml for kalk stirrer.

ATO: Tunze Osmolator- 15 gallon ATO tank

    Spectrapure RODI-90 GPD

    Controller: Neptune APEX

    Husbandry and Maintenance:

I clean my glass almost daily as I feed very heavily and have quite a bio-load. I use a flipper magnet which is fantastic. I inspect my tank very closely and let the corals tell me a lot. I test monthly at this point. I cannot stress enough to have proper test kits. I prefer hanna for alk and phos. Salifert for everything else. I do 5 gallon water changes once a month. I clean my powerheads every 2 months. I clean my skimmer every 6 months along with the bio pellet reactor unless I can see its clogged. I change my 7" filter sock when it begins to overflow. (2 weeks)

Been a long time. Tank is looking excellent!!!

I see you have a purple tang with the powder brown. No issues with these guys together? I have a yellow tang and want in the worse way to add a purple, but have heard that they are extremely aggressive.

I had the PBT before the purple but when I got the purple it was the size of a quarter. Super tiny, so he was a bit intimidated by the PBT. He had now gotten larger than the PBT and they flair a bit daily but nothing serious.

Awesome looking tank you have there. Do you feed your frogspawn anything special. Mine is still unhappy looking.
    1. dowtish
I do not spot feed any of my corals. I have lots of fish and run bio-pellets. They both feed my corals for me. I will every once in a while broadcast feed reef chili.
