if you got the space then i would go in sump also---i have had both, sometimes you just gotta run external because of either sump or height space...
i was told that bashsea had issues with the nw pump they were using with thier first generation skimatic, they have since moved on and only use sicce...
one aquarium out of just acrylic would be the best for long term use....just will cost a hell of alot more..but would be really sweet!!
bubble blaster pumps are good....till you have to replace them...$200+...outch!!

what size pump are you using for your return? maybe one 1in drain is not really enough, i know if too much water try draining through a 1in drain...

reef crystals for my tanks, i have tried tropic marin and brightwell salts but did not see any major or minor differance so i went back to reef...
been using reef crystals for over 10 years on several different reefs with different skimmers, never had a skimmer go crazy after any size water...
