As a beginner myself, I used this book as my primary setup guide. It not only gives descriptions and uses of the various equipment, but also has two full sized check lists to check off equipment you need, and then to actually set up an aquarium. It goes through every aspect that a beginner must know, from the benefits of protein skimming and live rock to reviews of all major families of fish including aggressiveness, hardiness and his expert recommendation as to whether a beginner should purchase that particular fish. He goes through in detail the various aspects of the setup that are easy to read and follow. He also has a section on disease and how to identify and treat several more common diseases. This book is a great resource for the beginner, particularly like myself, who seemed overwhelmed by all of the choices, equipment, and options available to a beginner.

Well I've had the bulbs in since Feb 21st and one just fried. Don't know why. But internally you can see it's done. No noticeable splash or exterior damage.

My coralife super skimmer 125 has been removing excessively large amounts of black skimmate since the day I installed it in my sump of my 55 gallon tank. While all aspects of skimming are truly the best, microbubbles could be an issue if you don't have a baffled sump.

The power cord isn't as long as I'd prefer but I am highly satisfied with the level 2 I bought for my 55 Gal.
The external magnet is slim enough to fit between the glass tank and the HOB protein skimmer and doesnt like to move once put in places.

While this would be a waste of $30 for a protein skimmer, you can still use the powerfilter for mechanical and chemical filtration, or you could even make it a DIY refugium. It did skim, but close to nothing and gave a light, transparent green skimmate color. On top of that, the venturi was so loud I could hear it across my house.

Every time i turn off the skimmer, or the power goes out, I have to manually re-start the Rio pump by removing it from the input shaft/tube and using a turkey baster to suck start the impeller. If I don't restart it, it just sits there an acts like a heater, cooking my tank.
Im going to replace it with a Remora Urchin soon. I have had the BakPak for one year, so i guess it does a decent job, I just don't like it. It just seem like compared to everything else i have read, it isn't pulling enough waste out of the tank, Im averaging about 1 cup a week! and the effluent isn't dry, it's pretty wet.
Hope this helps someone make a more informed decision.
