2 questions...

1) what do you guys mean by nuking it?
2) I am adding new rock to my tank, what is the best way to"kill" the existing,old rock that has algae on it?

 

Nuking it is basically making it dead rock. The method I'm going to use is soaking it in bleach followed by soaking it in water with baking soda and finally fresh RO water. This should kill all the algae spores on the rock and help export nutrients from the rock.

 

Method I use (and several others on here) that works great:
2 days 50/50 bleachwater soak
2 days freshwater soak
2 days baking soda/RO water soak

Let dry for 3 weeks or until rock is completely dry. Then you can cure it yourself or rinse it off real good and put in into the tank. Curing is best but not practical for everyone. This method WILL KILL EVERYTHING, which is a good thing!!

 

Wow, with all I read about bleach being so bad, that sounds kinda scary! And you add the rock back into a tank, with fish? It blows my mind, thinking about it...

 

The baking soda soaks up bleach and it evaporates when the rock is dry. I've done it, Otty, Tangster, and many others. Look at Otty's 265 gal. tank thread, all his rock was done with this method. In my signature pic all but the big bottom 3 rocks were nuked using this method. It works, haven't heard of anyone having a problem using this method.

 

Sounds like a good idea. Wouldn't this be a good thing to do with any new LR? Air dry? Inside/Outside? With lights?

Also is this considered bad manners to jump in on someone else's thread? Or is it all good?

Depends on who you talk to, but IMO yes, do it to ALL rock you get. Try to find good deals from people tearing down tanks, cheap base rock, whatever and nuke it. It is a longer process but worth it in the long run. All LR comes with "hitchhikers" some may be good, some may be bad. After all the $ you dump in a tank why risk it? And you save money along the way.

I forgot... ya let it air dry, you can also put a fan on it to help the process. Lights aren't necessary, mine is on a shelf in the laundry room! Lights fuel algae anyways, but this rock will be dead as dead can be when your done, so save the electricity!
