i agree with this except for the starving part,i bought a lawnmower blennie and will not touch the algae in my tank.it eats flake food and frozen mysis shrimp.i guess i got lucky i got one that eats prepared foods. Also if you get one you have to put guards around your power heads, they will swim in them and kill them selfs. Thanks JOE

Kole tangs love algae. Mine is non stop all day. I would also want to know the cause of the breakout. Take a sample of your water and bring it to a good LFS and tell them about the hair algae or even better take them a picture. Make sure they say they are very familiar with GHA if not don't waste your time and move on and find an expert. It has to be something in either the water or the lighting or the temperature. If it were me I would find a way to get rid of it naturally.

my lawnmower blennie won't touch long hair algae, he east at all the film algae on the glass ans stuff though, he also bites at the rocks so maybe they are also eating detritus. very cool fish but as a control for hair algae I'd say hit of miss, I had the LFS order me a small rabbit fish to help out till it gets to large for the tank.

Also how old are your bulbs?

If you need to expand your clean up crew I’ve had emerald crabs and turbo snails offer minor control on hair algae in the past but they will only eat it if it is relatively short. If the hair algae is too long then they will not bother with it and you will have to pull it out until it is a reasonable length they can manage.

Well, the GHA or whatever it was has been eaten. I finally found a kole tang, and i had been looking at them before as they are a beautiful fish and do not grow overly large. I purchased him and he/she eats all the algae everywhere that it can reach. It has been eating on the rocks and does not stop. It even eats the green slime algae on the rocks that i couldnt even clean with a toothbrush. I still have to clean the glass with the magflaot, but that is part of the hobby.
I believe the outbreak was due to phosphates from the tap. I am using RO/DI water now.

My question is: what causes GHA in the 1st place? I'm experiencing this problem now after having my setup almost 3 years. Its getting out of control.
