    Hi Renee and Greg,

I saw this guy on liveaquaria and was wondering if you knew anything about the hawaiian red eye. Is it just another kind of dwarf? I really want a yellow fuzzy dwarf but I am having a hard time finding one. I'm not necessarily sold on this guy but was just more curious what it might end up looking like and acting like.

Drs. Foster and Smith Diver's Den® - Dendrochirus barberi

    Thanks!
    Travis

No need. Just sign up for their daily email alerts (both the sneak peek and once the items are posted). Sneak peak comes around 1PM EST and will tell you what will be posted at 6PM EST. If you see something you want to get in the sneak peek, just get on there at 5:58EST and keep updating until the new ones are posted ;)

Altho it appears to be a moot point, and I didn't see the photo of the fish, I dunno if the specimen was a juvie or not, as they do change color as adults. We've kept D. barberi for about 4 years now...a bit longer, actually. Our specimen came in as an un-ID'd "dwarf lion" (we found it at a LFS when its body was the size of a dime).

It's a really great feeder, altho for some reason it gets a little snotty with our P. mombassae (I suspect they're both males...actually we KNOW the barberi is a male).

They aren't as visible as "D. fuzzy" but they're great fishes, and no other lionfish has their bright red eyes. One thing that is cool about them is they are one of the two native Hawaiian lionfishes (the other being P. sphex), and they are only found in HI. However, if you want a single dwarf lionfish, I'd recommend the fuzzy, for color and interaction...the fuzzy will always be there to greet you.

    Here's the adult phase:

and the juvie phase (note its irises hadn't gone red yet):

Just a cute pic of the barberi (on the right) and a juvie fuzzy in their growout tank:

Thank you Marshall! I didn't know that about liveaquaria, I will be signing up for email alerts!! Thanks again!

Thank you Greg for the write up on the red eye. My heart was set on a yellow fuzzy and after your write up I think its the right choice for me. I hope to find one soon!

DAM! Someone else knows about the alerts now!

Fuzzies are freaks. I love them. They chase us everywhere. When we feed them tonight I'll take a little video.

:O Thats a cool little guy. Dont know anything about lionfish though, just know that you shouldn't touch them, since their venomous, and its not a fun experience to get stung by it i've heard. But this guy looks awesome, if you get one of these, please come with some pictures, i wanna see it! :)

There's nothing cuter than a baby lionfish...

Here's our volitans when it was a tiny juvie...it lived in a 6 gal cube on our bathroom counter for awhile. Check the thermometer for scale:
