I've used Maracyn I to treat red cyano in the past. It is a gram-positive antibiotic powder containing B complex vitamins and the broad-spectrum antibiotic Erythromycin. Can get it locally for around $5.00. Sure beats the high price for the Red Slime Remover.

I've tried Maracyn, it seemed to work but the slime kept coming back. Upgrading my flow and lighting seemed to have fixed my Cyano problem. I still have a few traces where the flow isnt as heavy but that is also starting to go away. I've never tried the Red slime remover as the LFS didn't carry it but I would of 6 months ago.

Get rid of Cyano = More flow, less feeding, proper lighting (mine used to be shop lights with daylight bulbs, now T6's and I have a new setup coming tommorrow with 2x 250w MH and T5's)

I have tried the blue vet red slime remover and it worked well. No ill effects to any livestock. I think sometimes it is more of an "infection" from something placed in the tank acting as a vector than bad parameters or lighting. I ended up changing my light out after about 6 mo anyway and in addition to the red slime remover it has been eradicated.
