Are rotifters suppose to smell bad? My plankton also smells bad. Is that what the smell is from?

Do you think all the rotifers are dead?

What lights do people ussally use to culture plankton... I think i did it wrong.

Rotifer cultures usually smell like warm poop on a chicken farm. Having said that, make sure you're at least changing water/splitting the culture every couple of days so it doesn't get too bad.

And plankton.... I've had the misfortune to have two gallons dump out in my car... and I live in Florida. Plankton gets nasty when it dies. Check your cultures for movement, if there isn't any dump it and start over.

A proper rotifer culture should simply smell like the algae you are feeding. Our systems produce well over a billion a day so one would think they'd smell to high heaven, but they simply smell like the phytoplankton we feed them. What you are smelling is decomposing algae and rotifer waste. If you deal with the waste, and you do a proper daily cull, no smell :)

As long as you are changing water and expelling a portion of your rotifers daily you should have not much of a smell at all. Just a slight algae smell as others have noted...8)
