I had been using a 25G rubbermaid container to mix SW for water changes. After a month, I could feel the bottom of it getting kind of rough, and after a few more, I found stuff floating at the top of the water. I later realized that the SW was slowly eating away at the plastic, which was what was floating on the water. So I stopped using that, and am holding off on water changes until I can get a desirable barrel.

Just putting it out there to any reefer that thinks a garbage can is a good idea for storing water; it's not.

the rubbermaid BRUTE line is fine for water storage and salt mixing.

Some good info in there. Food grade containers are the best. I use a RM. Brute to store my RODI water then use the 5gal buckets from lowes to mix up salt. They work well and havent seen any break down or negative effect of using them after a year. I use them for RODI top off containers also.

Also some plastics are made with ALGAE KILLER chemicals such as livestock troughs.
and that just might irritate some reef dwellers or SUMP microalgae or plants including your phyto and dino live foods...
