im more of a canon guy but i have had one of these and they do indeed take pics, but the equivalent that canon sells has way more options, features, modes and what not.

Not true! I have the 3000 and canon equivalent, the 3000 is waaaay better in terms of ease of use, it shows you aperature ISO etc. right on the screen. I don't mean to cause a Nikon Canon fight.
I think you should drop the extra cash for a D70-90. Instead of a D3000 get the better D40 it is the same price better camera.

The d40 is out of production. I had mine stolen and recently replaced it with the canon xs. Good camera pretty comparable to the d40. I chose it over the 3000 or 3100.

Camera bodies get updated really fast. But good lenses last way longer than bodies. You are asking this question on 3reef here so you want to take great aquarium pictures. Get yourself a cheap (maybe even used but decent) body (ie: D40 ~$350) and a macro lens (ie:Nikon 60mm micro $500 ). You wont regret it.

Yes tank pictures. Also will be car and family pictures.
So seems both brands are good which would be easier to use?

d3000 owner for year and half. I like it, but i would sell this to get d3100, just because it takes 1080p video. But than again, I really want a ease view mode while taking picture, as in my eye not being stuck on that tiny hole to take picture. Its 2010 for god sakes, cant believe I have to take pictures 80's style

I think d3100 is the same eye in the hole way.

So if I do sell this, i would probably go D5000

My Canon Rebel T3i has all that stuff right on the screen too. It also has Live Mode, so you can watch the viewfinder to help focus instead of the viewfinder.

Anyway, I agree that you should invest in a cheap body, and go for a nice lens or two.
