I know that this is completely out of the blue, after 3 years of this post, and me, being inactive haha. I thought I'd do a quick update on Buddy though. He has exceeded my expectations, and currently weighs 217 lbs. Not obese weight, either. :) Of course he looks pretty large, with the droopiness and all, but he's not an unhealthy weight. He snoozes all afternoon, becomes hyper when the sun goes down and chases squirrels and such in the back yard. I expected to be feeding him four cups a day, but now it's 5 cups a meal, 10 a day.... Per vet's recommendation. He is truly a goliath, and a great guardian to boot. I almost feel bad when I see the UPS worker sprinting back to his truck. Hehe.

He is a perfect dog, unless we bring him into the vet. He might be scarred by the place considering he was boarded there for 2 of the first 3 months of his life, but he doesn't let the staff get too close to him. He is prone to ear infections and rashes, so we had to bring him in occasionally... Last time, they injected him with enough tranquilizers to sedate a 450lb tiger to the point of only moving it's eyes... And he was walking around on pure adrenaline, warding off the staff. Of course, he collapsed when we got home, but they weren't able to even clean his ears.... Here's some current pics. :)

The picture with the santa hat was when he couldn't move, right after he got home from the vet... Perfect time to dress him up. :rolleyes2: Buddy 1.jpg Buddy 2.jpg

image.jpg Beautiful dog. I have had a neo and an English in the past. I lost my English 2 years ago after a battle with cancer. I felt like I lost a family member. Enjoy every moment you can because it goes by so fast.

I love newfies as well... They're great swimmer dogs correct?

I am sorry for your loss. I feel that Buddy is the most human-like dog I have ever owned. Past dogs consisted of 2 golden retrievers and a chocolate lab (whom we still have). But Buddy definitely take up as much space as an actual family member-in heart AND home. :)

As most people have said here before, especially if you train them properly he can be a loving little git. However, I do think that you have to concern yourself with what others think. I have found that having the ‘larger dogs’ makes you appear scary and even antisocial at times.

That is definitely true. People have stopped visiting upon hearing Buddy bark on their way up the driveway. Plus, his slobber and gas also detract from the impression he gives people. And definitely; you have to train these dogs at a very early age, because once they near your size they will dominate if you haven't established dominance over them. I had a personal trainer for Buddy, who happened to be the ex trainer for the K9 force of the police department, who was very good at doing this. Although some of his methods were harsh, Buddy understands who the alpha is, and obeys. Not in a frightened way, but in a "I'll get pet and praised if I do this" way. And the few people who get close enough to touch Buddy do realize that he is an oversized lap dog.

Those Newfoundlands are awesome. I never knew they could be white!! They're giant. I love how much they resemble little bears haha. Thanks for sharing!
