Macro lens for Canon Rebel XT

What macro lens would you recommend for a Canon Rebel XT?

 

I have the 100mm f/2.8. If you can afford it get the L version. It runs about $400 more but it is well worth it and has image stabilization.

 

Uh, I might have to disagree with you. Don't know anything about aquarium photography, but spent 10 years as a professional sports photographer.
I wouldn't waste my money on the L series lenses and IS lenses are fairly over-rated. Most days the L series stayed in the cabinet because they were heavy and the pictures weren't any better. The IS lenses always stayed in the cabinet because they tend to make pictures a little soft.
The 100mm f2.8 from Canon is a sweet lens :thumb up:. It is hard to go wrong with Canon's mid-range lenses.
Another consideration would be some of the Sigma lenses.

 

I personally have the regular 100mm/2.8 and have used it for several years with my XT until I got the 60D. It's a great lens and one of my favorites. It does everything I needed it to do and that's what I look for when selecting a lens.

You can give the 50mm/2.5 and EF-S 60mm a look also.

 

Unfortunately, there aren't too many choices out there when it comes to macros. They are specialty lenses so there aren't too many variations. You really only have Canon and Sigma as a good aftermarket substitution. I would stay away from Tamron lenses as a general rule. You really get what you pay for in terms of quality and nothing really beats the OEM Canon line. As 2in10 has mentioned, Canon makes a 60mm macro but it's not as versatile as the 100mm.

 

Yeah the 100mm/2.8 and the 60mm/2.8 both are great choices.

 

105mm f/2.8 sigma macro. Just as good as canon but cheaper.

That sigma is not bad either by only thing t's missing is the sigma hsm, or ultrasonic motor for other macro photography I like to do.
