They are actually black. Blocks 100% of the light. And microwave ones should not melt either. The only light is little red dots from the holes, and a red glow from the glass.

I've been inspired and now believe this could aid my issue with hair algae, I've been having to scrub my koralia powerheads about once a week or every other week. The high flow they offer and the screen like cage they have are perfect grounds for hair algae to attach and grow since they're fairly close to the light.

This TV dinner tray style scrubber would be VERY easy to make! Just need to get me a few dinners, LEDs, magnets and the rest I already have as My fiance is rather crafty and I'll just steal some scraps from her =P

EDIT: Question about the LEDs. Because the Trays are used in microwaves and such they shouldn't melt from the heat from the LEDs correct?
Also I don't know about you but often what are those trays made out of? Some plastics leach garbage in to water... I know their used to in food so it SHOULD be safe, but it is a question on my mind.

They should be melt-safe, but you should test it.

They are made with PTFE or PET, I believe. You just need to wash the mold-release off.

I don't think so. Chaeto is limited by self-shading, and self-blocking of flow.

A useful way to stop bubbles if your UAS is not in a box:

very cool idea! im thinking of trying one of these in my sump, just to see if it can help a little more. I am trying to figure out how big of a screen to set up. i have about 24 gallons of total water volume and feed a thumbnail-sized brick of frozen food every other day (maybe a third of a cube). plus i feed my lps once a week in addition. any ideas? i don't have algae bad, just random patches here and there, a slight bit more then i would like
