JBJ 28 gallon owners thread.

In the interest of hopefully being able to find relevant information regarding equipment, lighting options and to share members tanks this thread was created.

Please contribute to the thread with your modifications, equipment preferences and images of your tanks. It makes no difference if your JBJ is in it's infancy, established or looks like a farm for nuisance algae, please contribute, even if you do not own a JBJ.

Basic overview of the tank.

Tank Volume: 28gal
Tank Dimentions: 18" x 22" x 22"
Glass Thickness: 6mm

Three lighting options.
1.Metal halide HQI: 150 watts, with 4 night view LEDs. Remote ballast (pulse).
2.LED: 89 watts. ( will add to specifics of this system)
3.Quad CF: 105 watts 10k/7100k, electronic ballast

Stock pumps are:UL-Listed Accela Powerheads (266gph each/16W each).
Ocean Pulse Duo—Alternating WaveMaker.
Integrated cooling fans (3000rpm`s).
Filter media basket: easily modified.

The system comes with a skimmer option. This skimmer uses old skimmer technology with use of a wooden air stone.

I like this idea! Usually if JBJ is anywhere in the thread title I automatically read it HAHA.

Anyways I have a CF Quad version that just got done cycling. I will be moving my green spotted puffer over for the moment and hopefully finding a suitable tank-mate that he will not eat! He will be going in tomorrow so I will post pictures then. I do have a question though...

If I wanted to start keeping corals, would I need to upgrade my lighting? I heard you could keep softer corals and leathers and stuff like that, but I was wondering what my options were if I decided to upgrade.

I have had CF nano cube and was able to grow all soft corals and lps and most sps ( if placed high in the tank). The CF JBJ provides more than enough light to grow above mentioned corals.

While I have not had the LED version it is my understanding that the lighting system is also sufficient to grow all corals mentioned above.

Have you made any additions to the tank equipment wise? And if so what?

well that is good to know! I will probably add some sort of coral in a few months once my tank becomes consistent. I have a AquaC remora skimmer on the way and a Koralia 3 powerhead in the works! Also about to order my CUC from ReefCleaners! This is a very exciting time and cannot wait to see my tank grow!

I'm in!;D, I own the jbj 28 quad as well and couldn't be happier with the tank or it's blinding cp lighting.After owning several different cp fixtures,this one takes the cake! I keep softies and lps and have had to relocate several corals lower due to washing out!After lowering,they colored right back up.There are only 2 things that I didn't care for,one being flow-so I did away with the wave maker and added a koralia 425 nano,also have another one coming(I"m looking to make it a flow monster!).LOL

The 2nd item would be the skimmer,without a sump,it leaves you with very few options and as Corailline mentioned,the stock skimmer is very old school and has a preformance to match.So after many hours of research as to what will fit,I found several good preformers that will fit with some mods but finally came across the aquamaxx hob-1 from the reviews and research I have done,this skimmer is a beast and will drop into the stock skimmer compartment(it will be a big plus to be able to raise the lid without having to remove the collection cup.).Will be ordering tomorrow!

Out of having 5 sw tanks with my largest being a 55,the JBJ 28 is by far the best i've ever owned hands down!


@ Allenmay8-If the remora you ordered is the full sized one and not the nano,let me know,I have a link to a nice detailed,pictured thread of how to do the mods necessary to make it drop in the skimmer chamber.And congrats on it coming together,that is a very exiting time!
The Aquac is another great choice of skimmer for the jbj!

 

If I am going to stay with my Quads I am not going to get many SPS corals. So do I still need to get an expensive skimmer with softies and lps corals. Maybe just a few easy SPS like montipora.

 

No you do not need to upgrade the skimmer IMO.

You can still keep all soft corals and lps just fine as long as water parameters are in check.

I have grown montipora higher in a nano cube with CF and no skimmer.

Hopefully others with CF lighting will chime in as well.

No you don't have to upgrade skimmers and i agree with Corailline,with your refugium and keeping up with your water changes,it will work.My reasoning for a major skimmer upgrade is to try to achieve a very low nutrient content thanks to me for importing nuisance algae,plus i also have alot of zoas and leathers and want to remove as many DOC's as possible.
