Well it depends of how old the clowns are when you get them, it's best to get when they are young as they can then fight to see who will be the female. Also can buy a mated pair that has been known to lay eggs but very costly. I believe they need to reach 12-15 months to mature enough, someone else can confirm me on this. also they need to form the bond, so this can takes weeks i've heard or even yrs or never. Mine have been next to eachother 24/7 for the last 15 months, also I have alot of larger fish which can also scare/postpone them to lay eggs. They host a huge LTA during day can reach 16-18in across. I also have a set of blk/wht clowns that i got a month ago that have been doing fine haven't formed the bond yet but working on it as they fight from time to time, they are hosting a larger RBTA that is up to 24in across.

Ok I have a question for you then, mind don't have a bond, in fact it's quite the opposite, plus it's a clarkii and a maroon, yet the clarkii laid eggs last night. They've been in the tank together for about 8 months. Is this normal?

Thanks for that info! Your tank is 180g though, would a 55 be big enough for two mated pairs? Them being so territorial and all. I only plan on having the pairs and another fish by the way

Shawnstank, i would say a 55 would be too small. alot of ppl said it wouln't happen in my 180 but i decided to give a try at first the orange & wht welcomed them even into there hosted lta but after 5-10 min they over stayed there welcome and the orange became very nasty, I noticed before i even got the new blk/ wht clowns that the orange ones would even during feeding would only go to the half way pt in the tank, so even when chasing the new blk/wht ones only chased till half way point now they both are appy on each end of the tank

Not normal but when they have laid eggs they will take on any size of fish. Some of the other clown are more aggressive.
