Re: F**** I MAY HAVE KILLED MY CLAM!

THe clam weakened when I tried to detach the foot strands from rock with my hands. They woudn't budge, they are like superglue, but on my last tug, I felt something give inside the clam. That was the mortal blow. I'm 100% convinced.

Like I said, I went to work, did some research on moving clams, found out you can cut the strands, came home to a half dead clam and cut him and moved him.

Yes I have halide lighting, the clam was doing very well except when I started to try and remove him from the rock. The rock was too narrow and he would tip from time to time in the last week or so.

Next one is going straight to the sand.

I am going to try something Barry suggested a long time ago and put a little rock or ironically maybe the half shell from this clam a 1/4 inch under the sand to give the new guy something big to attach too. ;)

He I saw something cool.  Some one created a circle out of Maine epoxy for a clam to site in.  After he made it he waited a couple of months for coranine to cover the circle and then he added a clam.  This is a great way to make a perfect ledge for a clam.

    That's a cool one J! :)

    hi Matt,

sorry to hear about your clam... :'(

the halfshell thing seems to work pretty well, so it's definitely something to consider. don't give up on clams tho, they're really cool.

ya might take a look at Barry's clams when you get ready to get another one...he has great stock and he treats each clam like it's his own. i got all five of mine from him. plus, his site is WYSIWYG so you get the clam you see. :D

    That is too bad Matt
I'm sure that the next one will be treated as royalty!
Also just from reading this I have learned about the pvc ring trick which I could use on corals too.
I lost a hammer due to a fall from bad placement and to add insult to injury my wife left him polyp's down in the sand till I came home from work. :'(
I tried to save him but he stopped expanding and whithered to a slow demise. Very sad but we move on and learn that a pvc ring may just be what a some what tippy clam/coral needs to be safe!
I wish you much luck with ALL your endeavors Matt!
