Getting up close to the Maxspect Gyre Riptide Generator was on my short list at MACNA and it did not disappoint. The Gyre can move some water. Especially when speed was oscillated by the prototype controller. And, for a large wave-waver, the Gyre can be low-profile when mounted near the surface horizontally or vertically in the corner. The sheer flow created from the Gyre launched the entire plane of water across to the other side where it bounced back generating the "gyre flows." This design eliminates dead-spots much more effectively than traditional powerheads. Keeping food suspended is an easy task and should make some corals happier. The first model to arrive will be the 35w mid-range version this October. The 35w will produce 4200 GPH and will retail for $299.

I am curious what the production controller will be like and if you will be able to chain Gyres together. Down the road I was told we may see the ability to hook up Gyres to our controllers which would be fantastic.

Curious to see how the 25w model compares to an mp10. TBH this gyre effect can be achieved with regular powerheads,( I have a gyre right now) and the surge effect with a controller, hydor smartwave, sicce wave surfer, etc etc.

What would be interesting is two of these at opposite ends of the tank on a controller.

Unless the 25w is around $100-$125, I think I'd rather just get an mp10 though.

Matt you should get your hands on one for testing ;)

Yeah VA I'd love to test it but I fear what this would do in my Nano! lol
I think the difference between this and a MP10 is that the MP10 puts out flow that is more cone shaped - extending from the pump - where as the Gyre puts out a wider wall of water.

A bit sad that I bought a set of vortechs for my nano and new 120. At least the vortechs are used, but I think the riptide is going to be quite a bit better.

WOW, that is a Very cool product. I can definately see alot of benefit with it. a pair o these on a 1 minute interval mounted in opposite corners facing opposite directions would be an awesome circular motion in cube-esque tanks.

I may have to keep my eyes out for this one when they launch it.. save my pennies. Unless I go for that new DA controller...

I was excited to see the riptides as well. I don't think ill be replacing my vortchs however. I was surprised that there is less suction than I had assumed based on the output. Its a revolutionary new design.

Ah ok that makes sense: a wall of water vs. a typical conical output. That seems to be the only advantage over other more conventional powerheads, with correct placement gyres can be achieved pretty easily with standard pumps/powerheads. MP10 can also create a literal wave which is basically a wall of flow too. Conceptually this is neat, but IMO is still outshone by the vortechs, especially for pricing.

Who knows though, as with all "revolutionary" things, the first model will probably only be around for 6 months before an updated version is released.

I agree with you on the first point, but I spent some time talking both with Coralvue and Maxspect and they said they would not follow the update every couple months mentality of Jaebo. The are committed to putting out the best pump they can and said there may be yearly updates as feedback comes in.

I believe many honest companies claim/adopt this policy. The problem is, when the technology and concept itself is so new there are bound to be kinks in the system, or ways to fine tune and/or tweek it to run better, stronger, etc.

My point of view is not that maxspect wants to make money by "rereleasing its products" but rather that the technology is so innovative, it will take time before it is perfected.
