Hey y'all. Not a noob.....just a new issue. looking for some experienced advice please.
I did a large water change this past Monday 5/2/16. Mostly because, I had old RO/DI filters so,I thought giving the tank some fresh new....clean water would be great. Plus, I had a decent size, shipment from Vivid Corals and wanted new water in the tank for them too.
The Coral arrived on Thursday 5/5/16. I dipped the corals before putting them in the tank as usual. As I am introducing the coral I notice a brown string or two in the tank. Nothing serious. Then a few more. I honestly, ignored it because,I have seen this action in diatoms before and expected it again with the large water change plus,I have always had diatom dust on my glass almost daily for years.
I, upon further inspection, noticed some strings on the glass today. Sparse but, present on the sand bed.
The tank is now completely covered with cardboard and will be for 3 days. Am I right to do so? Is there anything else I should be doing? in all of my years I have yet to have this issue.
My parameters are and were well within reason for a mixed reef and the hobby.
My equipment consists of a 92 gallon corner bow and 20 long sump, Reef Octopus Skimmer, Reef Octopus phos/GAC reactor, and an Algae turf scrubber, lots of live rock and a new clean up crew(I'm regretting).
    Thank you,
    Hayden

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I manually cleaned off the surfaces of the rocks and corals each day (turkey baster) and then I would clean the mechanical filtration once the water cleared.
When I resumed lighting I started at 2 hours. If I saw the development of strings or bubbles off the lights went.
I raised the pH of the tank using kalkwasser water.
I stopped all water changes for about 3 weeks.

This method appeared to work for me.

Hope that helps and good luck.

My wife thinks that my DT is always hungry. SO..... she feeds when I'm not around. Drives me crazy! I gotta hide that food from her. On a better note, the fish are really happy. I live in dino blowups. I'm interested in your outcome.

    UGHHHhhhhh!

I did 3 days of lights out. Corals all opened back up. I guess in the darkness my bubble coral zapped my beautiful gorgonian but....it's fine otherwise. No,trace of evil yet. So,far so,good Fo sho

High magnesium and alkalinity will help. Adding an oxidizer (hydrogen peroxide) will also help. Neither of these should be used as long term maintenance though. Obviously they're feeding off of an available source. During periods of combatting algae I always reccomend not to feed anything. Or feed very lightly if you must.

    Yep...mag is always around 1500....Alkalinity usually around 9 not it's 11....pH is usually 8....now 8.4.
All flagellates appear to be ceased. I assume theyd be back between yesterday and today. I'm keeping an eye out but,I'm confident I beat them. I caught the cycle in the very beginning. I got lucky. 20 years....never this.
