Got a 55 gallon tank currently cycling through for a couple of weeks, discuss I understand are pretty aggressive, would having some schooling fish in large numbers keep them safe and deter and "nibbling" or are they banquet morals ?

discuss can be aggressive among themselves and can get stressed by fish who are a lot more active than them. in the past i have been able to keep a couple discus (also in a 55, i would not attempt keeping more in this much water volume) together with a small school of about 5 fish of neon and glow light tetras.

my two cents, discuss are not easy to keep.

I had 8 wild discus in a 120 gal. for four years. had them with 25 lemon tetras and everything was fine. they have been known to eat cardinals and neons.

when you say not easy to keep, are you referring to them being dirty, or just plain fussy with water params, or difficult tank mates ?

Peaceful tank mates that can handle tems in the 80s, water doesn't have to be uber soft or anything, just stable.
What variants are you looking at? :)

They can be picky eaters. And need stable water

Stable water, often need WC to keep them happy is what makes them harder. Clean steady water is key to success. 55 is a bit small, you are maxing out at 5 discus and no other fish in that tank, and you want a minimum of 5 discus in a tank. All tetras are good mates, I have 13 cardinals and no issues.
