Hi. I have a 1 year old fantail in a ~15 liter tank and he doesn't have a lot to do in there (I'm 110% broke so I can't afford buying him decorations at this point). I just figure he's bored and could use a partner to hang with until I can give him a proper home (it'll be another month or so).

I know his tank is waay small even for one fish but what if i change out all or most of the water daily with conditioned water. There should be no reason why I can't keep two fish in a small tank right?

Why don't you wait till you get a bigger tank. 100% water change even once a week would ruin the bio filter that's in place.

I'm just bored and wanna do something nice for an eats n poops lol..

The tank is uncycled anyway after I had to emergency clean out his tank. I took him over when I moved into my new place and the previous owner had mistreated him so bad. I cleaned out like a liter of brown goo and all sorts of bacterial growth and stuff...yuck

I'm just wondering if that option would be bad for the fish for some reason I can't see (100% daily changes until I can set up a proper tank for him)

100% water changes will shock and kill your fish. Keeping things stable is key with small changes. Wait until you get another tank because the stress, paramater swings and lack of oxygen will kill your one fish let alone two.

    Hendrixx,
I know you love your fish but as you said, at 100% broke your tank upgrade isn't going to happen very soon. For the sake of your fish, please take him back to the LFS where they can find a proper home for him. Then when you get your bigger tank you can find another one. Certainly adding another fish to an already bad situation wound be wrong on many levels.
I hope that does not sound harsh, but it is the right thing to do.

    Helen

Sorry not gonna happen in a million years. I'll jump off a bridge before giving him up to some kid who'll stick him in a bowl and poke him with a stick. Nope he's staying with me.

But I'll take you guys' advice and let it wait. Just really looks like he wants a partner ya know..He's totally mesmerized by his own reflection dancing back and forth trying to kiss his own image lol.

Here he is today after I totally sterilized his tank. Think he's suffering from a parasite or bacterial infection so I just threw all the gravel out and starting a new cycle. He's a happy poops though and healthy except he's making super long white thread like poops ever since I got him. I think there was bacteria or fungus overgrowth in his tank when I got him (there was white fuzzy stuff growing in the gravel and filter).. Been giving him garlic baths and feeding him garlic soaked flakes.

    Welcome to 3Reef

Nice fish. Garlic in his food, is he Italian?

Oh yea, the Garlic myth, just think how much Garlic has been sold solely due to the Aquarium/fish industry.

You might want to check out 3Reef's freshwater forum. There is a sub forum regarding goldfish. Perhaps a moderator could move your thread there for you?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !

    Excellent idea.

Hi Hendrixxx and welcome to 3reef. :)

You've received good advice. Smaller water changes to prevent damage to the biological filter. Acquisition of a larger tank when able, hold off on future fish until you have more room.

I pretty fond of Goldfish, always have been. Your fish looks healthy, there is no need to provide him with a tank mate until you have a larger tank, he will be fine by himself.
