Converting my bedroom into a jungle!

Well as my involvement in the reefing hobby is dwindling I have decided to add more plants and planted aquariums to my bedroom. The goal overall is to keep these builds as clean, and automated as possible. I already have a mature 55 gallon amazon themed 55 gallon.



This is a relatively old picture of this tank, but it gives an idea as to what I am working with. I hope to add a couple more species of plant and possibly some discus to this tank to finish off the largest system in this room.




On top of the dresser in the back corner will be a 16 gallon bowfront planted tank. To the right of the dresser will be my phalenopsis orchid collection on top, followed by an Iwagumi style 3 gallon JBJ pico tank, and below with be another custom rimless Iwagumi style aquarium.

I gutted the shelving in the dresser in the back corner. I plan on this being the "equipment control center." This will house this filtration for the larger tanks, the CO2 tanks, powerstrips, aerators and everything else needed.



As stated before, the goal is to have this look as clean as possible. I want the set ups to look as simple as possible, even though a decent amount of equipment is being utilized. Ill keep posting with the progress. ;D

 

Very cool! I'd like to try an Iwagumi tank myself. I just don't understand how the CO2 dosing works

btw i suggest a zygopetalum as your next orchid less hardier than phaleonopsis but one of the few scented orchids that will fill the room with a delightful smell!

That planted tank is beautiful Norg.

You obviously have the rare green thumb and blue thumb.

If you want a fast growing green vine that is easy try a sweet potato.

 

Its really not that difficult. I personally find it to be much much easier than reefing.

Haha. Very cool man! Post some pictures of your room! Id love to see what that looks like. If I stick with the orchid theme Ill definitely look into that species. I am debating if I should go for a different type of plant that flowers more often. Im really still a noob when it comes to orchids though.

Thanks Cheryl. Im much better at growing plants than corals. lol Ill look into it! Our house is covered in potted plants so even if I dont have room for it in my bedroom Im sure we could go with it elsewhere.

 

Nick, you just missed the Orchid swap in Madison. Its a bigger deal than most frag swaps. My wife collects them, so if you need any help, lmk. She has 60 or 70 or so. Maybe more, I'm not sure. For most of the potted ones, she uses clay balls instead of moss or vermiculite. There's always different ones blooming.

 

Norg, long time no see! Whats up with the frag setup? Good luck with your endeavors, I love planted systems done right.

 

I seem to miss everything... lol Ive been forced to lay low for the last two weeks. Ive been recovering from throat surgery. Feeling great now though. The down time when I was stuck in my bed made me realize I can easily make my planted tank better, so I should. 60-70 orchids!? Thats awesome! Id love to come see it and your tanks in person. Maybe shoot a little video as well?

Hey buddy. The frag tank is in the process of getting parted out. Along with my 30 gallon most likely. I am onto the next chapter of my life. I plan on buying a house in the next two years and thats a major commitment, not only in time but money. Id much rather just stick to fresh water that costs a fraction of what reefing does for now. But when the time is right Ill come back with a big build. Its a temporary hiatus at best.

On a different note, I got a couple new plants! Two spider plants that were in a different pot in my living room. (my mom doesnt know I stole them. lol) along with a nice bromeliad.



Besides these I got a nice gardenia and another species of spider plant. Atleast I think so, it wasnt marked and was a dollar so I was good with buying it. lol




Also, here is an FTS of my JBJ pico. Its an iwagumi inspired tank that currently only has dwarf baby tears in it. I plan on adding cherry shrimp in the future when the foreground has grown in.



As far as my 55 goes, I really tore the wisteria in the center of the tank apart. It will grow back as always though. This stuff grows way too fast... Everything was trimmed down. Im currently deciding on new plant stock.

My favorite fish by far. Ive had her for 3 years. Not the best shot to show how gorgeous she is, but I still thought it was interesting.
