Smaller clams are harder to take care of but are way cheaper. I bought my 2 baby maxima clams for 40 each. Tank has to be stable as far as cal, mag, alk go.

I've seen where someone actually has a clam starter kit for sale. Comes with 2 diff size cradles, brush & some liquid. But as a noob, it might increase living chances. When you say cal, mag & alk should be stable. Do you mean as in daily, weekly kinda stable? Mine is stable cause I don't have much to consume it yet. I've also read they should be in an established tank? Mines only few months old.

As stable as you can make it daily. I got my first clam on month three and I haven't lost one yet. I'm up to six now ;D
