Hi was just wondering if it's ok to put a blue linckia in with a fan sponge. Also, I have a 30 gallon tank with 2 small clowns, a royal grammar and a cleaner shrimp. On Friday I am going to add 1 green chromis, and some snails. in the future I'd like to add a neon gobie, banggai cardinal and maybe in a year or 2 a mandarin. Does this sound overstocked or in your opinion or do you think that would be fine?

Hello Reef and welcome to 3reef.

I've not owned a blue linckia and can't speak to compatibility with the fan sponge but many folks on here believe they are best left in the wild due to their difficulty in keeping alive. I know a few on here do have them in their DTs and I believe are doing it successfully. Maybe one of them will chime in on this.

As far as if you are overstocking or not, personally, I try to maintain 1" of fish (adult size) per 4 gallons of water. with your clowns, royal gramma and chromis you are 12.5" adult size. That calculates out to 50 gallons. Remember this is the water volume of what's remaining after you've added your rock, corals and such, not a 50 gallon aquarium.

Thanks for the reply. I've noticed a white disc on the starfish's central disc. I'm not holding out much hope for the little fella

Wait so you have one now? I wouldnt ever put a starfish in a tank unless its quite large and quite established (100 gal+, at least a year old). Def wouldnt do a mandarin. I think even in my 220, I would never attempt another mandarin again. They are both better left in the ocean IMO.

I've returned it to my Lfs now. Don't think I'll be buying another one.

I love my pair of mandarins. I've witnessed their courtship since the year that I've had them. I think my success has been with the two bottles of live pods every month or two. But, I agree with Civ. unless you have a larger tank with lots of rock work for their food to hide and the mandarins to hunt through it would be a recipe for disaster.

Ok, if I don't put the mandarin in this tank, do you think the rest of the fish would be ok
