Hi there, my orange fan sponge is bleaching. I am feeding phytoplankton once a day with the skimmer off since I've noticed this in the hope of reviving the specimen, but it hasn't improved much over the last few days. I am seeking advice on whether it is possible to regain colour once bleached or on the flip side when is enough enough, should I remove it as I am led to believe they release a toxin into the tank which can take it out.

The bleaching isn't overly bad atm but I would say it's showing no signs of improving as of yet.

    Regards, Graham

A big cause of sponges dying is exposure to air. When you go to buy most sponges make sure the store does not take it out of the water to bag it. And the bag should not have air in it for the short trip home. I only know of a few sponges that exposure to air will not kill, but better to not take the chance. But even that those I would not take it out for long. Sadly your sponge is one of the more sensitive ones and probably will not recover. If it was mine I would use some sharp scissors and cut all the dying tissue off including a little good tissue. With a little luck the rest may survive. In my experience they are not toxic when they die. Good luck!
