I was woundering if it is ok to use baking powder to raise the level of PH in a marine tank?
I remember using it long ago in a chiclid tank I think.
also any hints on the dosing quantities (if possible) would be great

What is your pH running? Kalkwasser may be better choice.

I am not with my tank at the moment(working out of town) to set anythink like kalk up unfortunatly.
My girlfreind is sitting the tank for me. She tested the PH today about 11am and was down to 7.9, I know I have a box of baking powder in the apptment somewhere.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, better used to raise KH. If you don't want it to raise your pH bake it at 300.

Arm & Hammer Washing Soda is what I use to raise pH not baking soda.

If you are wanting to make a buffer then use Baking Soda and 20 Mule Borax 4 to 1 mixture.

The only thing with baking soda and any other froms for rising PH, Is that it also rises alk and dkh. So becareful. I think the dosage was 1 teaspoon for every 20 gals, but Im not sure. I know Tangster knows.

CaHO2 also raises pH, about 1 tbs per 100 gal should bring you to 8.3 without effecting the dKH or Ca to much. CaHO2 isnt recommended to raise pH, but it works when needed.

Hey! Hold your horses! Just buy some decent pH buffer, that is made of organic salts! Baking soda, washing soda, and all "sodas" simply introduce an excess of Na+ ions that can cause an osmotic stress in your tank. As a result your bacterial flora, that is very sensitive to Na+/K+ balance may die very quickly! The same trick (with high Na+/Ka+) was used for hundreds of years in preparation of meat (before the development of refrigerators) when people knew hipersalanity (large concentrations of Na+/K+) work as a preservative and kill bacteria!
