    Depends on some factors. What kind of cichlids, how much filtration, & how often you do water changes.

    Thinking max 5" fish - canister filter - I do 10% WC's every week on my reef and on this one.

    5" fish may need more room than a 40 breeder depending on species, probably be fine though. 10% weekly water change is good, but it wont hurt to do more lol.

    Under gravel filters help a lot with cichlids.

    It just depends what kind you have. I use to have cichlids when I was younger. Do you have any idea if you want to do south american, north american, or african?

    try looking into lake tanginika there smaller fish

    Most African cichlids get really big I wouldn't do anymore then 10. And I currently have a 94 gallon cichlid tank.
