Has anyone ever used this product, Activated Tri Base Pelletized Carbon ®? or with the Right Now! Bacteria ®? Curious to see how this works and if it works well with a reef tank.

No, never heard of it! Just be careful because some carbons will add phosphates to your water!

Most people use Carbon for chemical filtration. This company uses carbon for living space for bacterial biofilms. Seeing as how I have LR and LS, I don't see a need.

FOOTNOTE: 99.9% of the pelletized carbons available are vapor phase carbons and are not even remotely as efficient as liquid phase carbons. This study is old but look at how poorly the pelletized carbons did.

I introduced the Right Now bacteria and Tri-base carbon on this very forum about a year ago, most people though this was a joke of some kind. Well, it's now a year later, my tank is now almost 3 years old using nothing but tri-base carbon and Right Now bacteria as method of main filtration with pH rock as a calcium and pH buffer. My pH is stable at 8.3 24/7, Ca is at 910ppm, Alk is @ 300+, Mg is @ 7500+, DO is at 10 all without a protein skimmer and calcium reactor. Nitrate is around 10 and I keep it at around 10 because this is a reef tank.

Folks, all I can say is this is no joke, anyone think this filtration method is someone kind of fly by night thing or snake oil better think twice, more and more people are notice these product and are welling to give it a try. I have not have one person call me and say the product did not work as advertised. As long as you follow instructions it will work. All those number list above are all completely out of wack when compare to a "normal" tank. Seasoned hobbist will tell you these nubmers can't possibely exist in a reef tank without causing some kind of problem, but it does. It does so only with the Hiatt 24hour cycle using the tri-base carbon, Right Now bacteria and pH rock.

Well we have a huge barrel of the tri carbon pellets at the shop .like a 1,000 lbs of it all i can say its done nothing special there and its the dirtiest stuff I ever had the displeasure to work with. Now that having been said I brought a few pounds home for this tank we have here . I want to compare apples to apples. I will say I like the sound when water hits it real fizzy :) . But I'll try it and see what it does . I'm an old horse and it takes a lot to impress me I have seen more then a few greatest bestest newest products come and go in this hobby over the last 40 plus yrs.. Even a few right now bacteria instant tank bacteria for an instant cycle all you need to do is just add water and animals and that it :)

    CUT for content

"First let's start with the skimmer, what it is and what does it do? Protein skimmer is first used in Fresh water applications, yes, fresh water. The some one decide to adopted for marine aquarium use and find it quite useful so soon every one start to using it. "
Can you elaborate why not to use a skimmer?

For folks that have kept an anemone or clam knows when they die its a mess for the tank. If you don't remove the dead animal, it will pollute the water and cause all kind of problem. With the Hiatt system dead anemone or clam is not a problem, the dead can rot in the tank all day, the ammonia will not spike, nor you will smell its odor from the water because there is no odor. I feed my angel and butterfly clams every day, even if they don't finish I left the clam in the tank all day, would you dare to do that would your tank?

I'm also not sure I understand how bacteria can decompose things that quickly? Theres bound to be some die-off right?

Sorry to hijack, but would you care to elaborate?

I didnt mean to be agressive and hassle you, but you dont really elaborate in your site.

MDeth, Lets not take such an aggressive approach to asking questions.

Regardless of if you subscribe to the theories please respect each other and learn what you can.

    Thank you

OK, you lost me here..... you said you have some 1000lb of tri carbon at your shop I am guess you run a fish store? You mind tell me where did you purchase the carbon from? that will tell me whether you have the right carbon, not that I don't believe you but its not likely someone would buy a 1000lb of Tri-Base Carbon and set on it, since the price is not cheap compare to other carbon sold on the market.

Second you make no mention of bring the Right Now bacteria home with you, I am guessing you are not using the bacteria right? Let me stop you here, if you are not adding the Right Now bacteria its not going to work. Without the Right Now bacteria the carbon is just like any other carbon and will do what carbon normally does nothing more. Even if you add the Right Now, if you don't have the proper flow rate or your setup is incorrect it still not going work . So before you come back and say this does not work, and in the interest of full disclosure, please be specific on how are you conduct your test.

Finally, your last sentence is very puzzling for me:

Are you saying all we need is to add water and animal to have it instant cycle that it nothing else? If that's true then why the 30 day(given take a few day) wait to cycle our tanks? I am sorry, but I read it back and forth I am not getting what you are saying.

First let me be clear, I am not saying not to use a skimmer. I am saying you have an option not to use a skimmer if you want to. I'll answer the rest with your next question.
