    i have a 60 gallon saltwater tank.
but i have no money so i might be taking it down. :(
so im thinking about setting up a aggressive freshwater tank.
i have an overflow box so how would i setup up the sump for freshwater?
do i need a protein skimmer?
all information will come in handy

A $25 regular hangon filer with bio screen will work for freshwater.. You dont need a skimmer.. probly could just use your sump too. let it cycle though before adding any fish.

I dont believe that a protein skimmer will work in fresh water.
Keep in mind that just because its freshwater its not necessarily cheap. You'd be surprised how much your gonna have to shell out for a bruiser tank.

It would be basically the same set up minus the skimmer. you want need all the extras like expensive lights, additives, and power heads.

you dont need bioballs but some form of media is needed for biological filtration. a skimmer wont work in fresh water because there is not ions to form the neucleus for the bubble to form on so is pointless except for airation. the basic set up for a fresh water sump is overflow, sump, filter wool, bioballs, noodles/rocks, heater and retun pump easy as that. you can use any media u want aslong as it has a good surface area and wont leach
