+1 on the union valves. Its all I use now - even with ball valves I make sure they are the union type.

Thank you for posting pics. I've been showing my husband so he knows what to do :)

He asked what did you use to drill the holes in your tank?

I'm in the process of ordering glass for my baffles an overflow box ( 1/4" thick. Is that ok?). Box will be 20x5x3. Also top of the box will be even with aquarium bottom top trim. Is it ok? And also I'm not sure how far from bottom overflow box syphon and open channels elbows should be? Thanks again.

The tees are fine but you want the main pipe to run straight down.If you install the tee in the way you have pictured it will cause too much backflow.Turn the tee so you still have a straight shot into your sump. Also drain lines are usually 1 1/2 inch pipe.Anything smaller will cause a loss of pressure.Heres a good link.

Yes. That pic is not accurate, sorry. If it comes to size of the drains. With Bean Animal overflow, you want that one pipe ( syphon ) full of water so 1 1/2 might be to big. You need little flow in open channel line… Im learning, I might be wrong but after reading 301 :) pages about it I think that how it is…

I don't think it matters if the second drain is actually draining. Its really there as a backup but I could be wrong as I have never used that type before.

For everyone who is interested in this I want to let you know that probably for more then 1 week nothing will happen… I ordered some glass for my baffles and overflow box. Glass shop is swamped so it will take them at least a week. also I ordered gate velvet and returns Jets from BRS also will take few days. also higher quality silicone for gluing overflow box. So I will take a break but for sure will let you know when progress will be made…:)

Ok. I'ts been a while but I got so busy with staff in my house. I replaced my roof and Furnace and Air conditioner so I didn't have much time for my project. But I gather all my parts and finally did it. Not all done yet but close. I need your advice, please take a look and let me know if that will work ( I hope it will, all glued already) No big deal if I have to change something but I rather not. Also let me explain. I will find some way to protect fishes and snail from going to overflow. I went easier way and just put Emergency Line in the middle ( fuge area) since it won't hurt anything and really should stay dry anyway. No sand in the huge so it will still work in case Emergency ( I hope right?) I put Gate valve only in Syphon line since that's the one that I'll have to tweak the most ( gate valves are so expensive but they work great). Yea I know I didn't put unions but not a big deal to cut something if needs to be…Return Line split to 2 corners. Return line is not connected since I don't have pump yet. If you approve all above then I need few more things from you guys so me and others can learn more and avoid costly mistakes. 1. How do O make that Open Channel line. Drill thru PVC Cap, what about Fitting and line? 2). What return pump you guys recommend? It will be easier corals, softies, maybe hardier SPS. ( The whole point of downgrading is to kind of do less ) 400-600 gal/hour? Enaugh? Maybe you guys have something for sale. I really want something quiet. That's why I did Bean Animal overflow. Will see…
