    Hey Tyman

    cycling means

allowing the tank to develop in order that the bacteria required is adequate to deal with the wastes being produced

there are several strains /pecies of bacteria involved
many of which process waste to ammonia
then species process ammonia to Nitrite
more species process the Nitrite to Nitrate
and finally species of bacteria process Nitrate to Nitrogen gas

Nitrates are also used by plants and algaes etc

if you introduce to many fish to soon, there is not enough bacteria to process waste and the fish could suffer and in fact demise due to ammonia or nitrite poisoning

use of a water conditioner and bottled bacteria for freshwater tank, can certainly help to ensure conditions are as ideal as possible for your fish

there are often losses in a new tank "New tank syndrome" but taking your time to stock the tank, can certainly help to reduce the risk

Well with my first ten gallon I started of with 4 neon tetras, they are great fish and are very hardy and also very lively, I then got myself 3 Colombian tetras good looking fish get to about 3cm also a very hardy fish (after one year in my 10 gallon I got a bigger 30 gallon tank and they still survived for the next year and a half). Then i got 2 spotted Corydaros, they are bottom feeders and move around quite active when kept healthy and lastly but certainly not the least I got a nice stripey, not as hardy but with a motivated carer can live a long time.

    Hope this helped :)
