Zoa Bleeding?

I just recieved (Tues.)a bunch of new corals through mail order.Mostly sps with the exception of an Acan and two small zoa frags with a few heads each. A few of the heads opened on the one frag but none of the heads opened on the other. I was gonna move em because I thought they may be in too high of flow and weren't happy,but then again they're new and I didn't want to stress em anymore. In any event,just noticed one of the heads on the frag where none have opened has this reddish fluid? leaking off the side of it.Some has spilt onto the frag disk.It looks almost like blood as it is dark.Any ideas? Should I sever this head from the rest?

I didn't dip them,like I've read through some other threads, because I don't have the chemicals to do so. I also can't provide pictures currently,sorry.Everything else seems to be fine.I have no fish or other inverts(aside from CUC-which consists of only bristleworms and amphipods mostly). Just LR and these corals.

 

Go to the drug store and get some tincture of iodine to dip the corals with the injured polyp. This will help it heal. 10 minutes with 20 drops in a quart of tank water will do. Throw out the tank water and the wash of the coral in another quart of tank water and dispose of that. Be careful and not touch the liquid spilling as it can be poisonous to you. Also put carbon in your filtration if you do not have any now to keep the fluid from harming other animals in your tank.

 

It should be fine. It sounds like its just expelling zoaxenthella (the protozoans that convert light energy into food from the coral). They can expel it for a few reasons. Could be either from the general stress of the move or they may like the existing strain of your tank better than what they were carrying before. Either way no need to worry, just give it a little time.

Thanks you two! I'll wait it out and see what happens.I have read about the expell of zooaxenthella,just never seen it before! I'm a newb so anything that looks out of the ordinary worries me.

Think the iodine dip procedure is something I should do in the future for all zoa's being introduced or is that only to treat illness?

 

Both, it can help with pests on the zoas.

 

Just wanted to update this post.

All Zoa heads are currently open fully and doing well,except for the polyp that expelled. But it looks like it's coming around.Definitely not dead. Patience is key...
