Been trying to research this a little and I've only found a couple pictures of it. If I drilled my 10 gallon and installed a bulkhead could I just put an elbow pointing up towards the top of the tank on the inside and then just run pvc from the outside straight to the sump with a ball valve? Make sense?

well i think on ny tank under 16 gallons you dont need a sump its unnecessary, a hang on back filter or fuge, or both would do great. ive seen little hang on back refugiums that would be like equivelant to the built in sump in a biocube. but if i were you i would simply do a hang on back filter and a hang on back skimmer. or just lose the skimme rand do a water change more often.

All very true, I was just trying to test some things out on the small scale. I have a DIY overflow but to be honest it's a bit unnerving. Everyday I come home the first thing I do is check to see if I have a wet floor.

I may just break the sump down and go with just the display.

Drilled overflows like that don't surface skim as well as an overflow box.

that link looks different than the original pic that I saw...

The elbow was in the tank and point up so the surface skimming would be alot like the diy pvc overflows.
