My coral had been doing well, when al of a sudden I noticed this thick slimy looking substance. I have forgotten the type of coral but I hope from the picture someone can tell me what it is an do two get rid of it.

I have been fortunate overall with my tank, and hope this isn't the start of a problem. I do water changes every other week, my salinity is 1.024, temperature is 78.8, calcium around 400. I have been using Pohls extra every day, and feed zoo plankton and Roti feast each day.

    Your help would be appreciated.

To me this looks to be some kind of sponge. Couldn't honestly tell you what's wrong but to me looks like it's losing that limb. dont take my word for it but, I know a few on here are pretty good at distinguishing sicknesses in sponges.

Any idea what would cause areas to die? It was doing fine until recently and I wondered if there was something I could do to prevent further problems

It looks like an Orange Tree Sponge. See below please.

They are non photosynthetic which means they require small suspended particles such as phytoplankton and other organic compounds. Exposure to air can cause die off as well. Liveaquaria classifies Orange Tree Sponges as expert only. It can be done but you really need to research the topic thoroughly.

    Good Luck

The spots on the sponge are areas of dead tissue. We keep this specific sponge in our 125 for the emporer and queen angel to eat. The spots where they nibble on turn white and eventually heal and it keeps growing. Yours looks like something took a chunk out of it. I feed the tank multiple times a day so there's always suspended particles in the water coloumn. As coralline said, check out the read live aquaria as they are tough to keep.
