    Hi everyone. Long time!

Here in California we have a elementary school program called "Trout in the Classroom" where we have students set up an aquarium and watch rainbow trout grow from eggs and are eventually released back into designated stream systems.

My question is relating to power heads. We have a 35 gallon tank (36x15x15). I have been told that the trout LOVE swimming against a fairly strong current. I wanted to know if anyone has any experience with trout. I have been eyeing to buy one or maybe even two Hydor Koralia Evo 600 pumps (chose the hydor because of how quiet they are, I have had one for 5 years and still completely silent!). Does anyone think that pump would be way overkill/underkill? I am thinking of setting up the pump(s) on one side of the aquarium and pushing the water across the length to give them a sort of simulated stream feel.

    Any input is greatly appreciated!

Also, anyone in California that is interested in learning about the program you can check it out here: https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/CAEP

what a great program! I'm afraid I can't help with the question definitively but I'd think that it wouldn't be too much but I'm not sure how strong young trout are as swimmers. Marine tanks with a lot of hard corals pack a lot of flow and the fish seem to adapt pretty well - most of my marine fish like flow as well.

Thanks for the response! That is the dilemma I am in hah! I think I am going to go with the Hydor Koralia 600. It might seem a lot (600g/h for a 35gal) but its a much softer flow compared to something like a Rio or Maxi.

Ill update with pictures once we start! (Hoping to have it set up early January.

A random flow pattern would probably be a better choice as it would give the fish some different patterns and a rest period. I would look into a wavemaker.☺
An MP 10 would be great or even a Jebao PH for a cheaper option.

Oh, that's an interesting one. I will def check it out, though the trout are used to living in a steam system with a pretty constant flow, not sure how they would react to a surge effect.

Even though they live in a stream there are still areas where there is less flow where they will shelter to rest.☺ Good luck! Sounds like an excellent program!!!!
