Both! The lampshade was a unique solution. I just see that 180 with LED's along the top and it would look really nice that way. With the modern look of the lower stand.

Your idea will also be nice, just wondering if you've considered the open top? Obviously, you'd need a screen.

Sounds good Todd.I had an idea for you to consider, how about skinning it with some kind of material that will accept normal interior house paint well and then painting it to match the color of your room? You could also use the same type of trim to match the baseboard and any other trim in the room.If you were to do this with the stand and canopy both I think they would seem to be part of the room and the tank itself would really POP! Almost like an inwall but better with more viewing area and angles.

    Ya know,

    THAT, is a great idea!
I have thought of this, but really, this IS a great idea.

Actually, one of the local gurus did a peninsula build for someone local, and did this very thing.

It would probably require drywall, which isn't the best thing to get wet I thought.

But that is a great idea also, and I have not bought the wood yet, so it's still fair game.

Yes, but I have already build my stand on the taller side. Bottom of the tank is 36in high.
And, My ceiling is 18 ft over the tank in my family room.
It is also against the wall to my stairway, that is a see thru railing with uprights.
I didn't want to use my current 2x4 light hanger - too short anyway, and too not finsihed looking for my new build.
Thus I figured instead of hanging the lights, I would place them in a canopy.

While the open top does look nice, I'm going for the more of standing eye level look.

And, why would I need a screen?, No jumpers, and none planned atm.

Yeah,I am not that familiar with what's available as far as building material but maybe someone can help out with some info on something you could use that would do well in a moist environment and would also accept the paint well. The people at Lowes or Home Depot may even know of something.

Yes, you're right, and I'm sure there is a material that would work.
I think I will look into it, however after much ado, I'm fairly set with my stained Maple finishing atm.
There is a guy to ask at Menards that really seems to know his stuff,
it's still a possibilty. If I go that route- you'll get the reference!

I was thinking more along the line of the hang on or clamped on lights (like with the hooks and such) that some have built. I really like sailor's idea - that does sound really neat as well. As I've said before, whatever you do I'm sure will end up looking awesome!
