Cool..keep playing! Yea, I remember Necktonics under gravel filters...they were like the flimsiest things, but worked well...back in the day...LOL I was talking with my buddy and uber aquascape, Johnny Ciotti, about using crused coral in a 'scape...we might just see it make a little comeback!

Thanks for the kind words...It's fun to share stuff with readers...People are telling me to write a book; perhaps...perhaps...

I like the trend with floating glass hydrometers! Throwback reefing is still alive and well!

Didn't know jean jackets wasn't fashionable anymore!!
Anyway just like to pick up on the bit about guppys, As a boy in the 60's they was my first fish, we kept them in a tiny angle iron tank, no heater and this is the UK, no filter, no added air and they was cleaned by netting them all out when the water was black, tipping the tank water away and topping it up with fresh tapwater.
They thrived and breed, and we was always giving them away to whoever wanted them.
Now with all of the line breeding they are not so easy to keep, there natural hardiness has been lost, even with todays technology they take a lot of pampering to keep them alive for any good length of time.
I just hope the clown fish don't go the same way.
And to the OP that was indeed a good read, thank you for a trip down memory lane.

hydrometers haven't vanished from the hobby yet?

Man I hated trying to get all the bubbles off the swing arm. Refractometer is the only way to go.

FLOATING hydrometers, not the plastic swingarm type, work pretty well if you are careful to read them correctly.I still use mine to quickly check sg when preparing for a water change. If it looks good I will then take a reading with my refractometer. It saves time since I do not need to clean the refractometer as much. The last two times I did this the two readings were almost identical.

I know I'm missing the point but my take away is to get a floating hydrometer! I wouldn't mind double checking the temp anyway.
