things out of control

So aside my aiptasia problem I've been fighting for forever the algea came back and now it's worse. for a while I kept getting this green balls of thick algea that really bristly. I tear it off and it comes back worse like hair algea. I cant figure out what it could be other then probably the excess sunlight it gets from the window. (mother in law keeps leaving the curtains open) so I've covered up all sides of the tank and still it's growing like crazy. done a few very large water changes. my last resort is to nuke all my rocks because of both aiptasia and the algea. (tried the nudibranches and they were decimated by all the fish except my wrasse and the cardinal). any advise before I do the unthinkable?

 

GFO/reactor. Urchins. Less lighting. What size tank and how many fish?

 

got 3 tuxedos, run my lights at only 4 hours, 90 and 8 the largest being my kole. running a skimmer rates for 180. run go and carbon but not in reactor.

 

I'm thinking that starting over will eventually land you in the same spot unless you make some changes. Even if you start with clean rock and sand the spores are microscopic and will eventually return. The best way is to manage the problems. Might try algae scrubber and/or reactors with carbon and gfo. You need to take out all the nutrients you put in. One frequent scenario that may be yours involves a chunk of the nutrients being exported by being absorbed by your rocks until they're saturated. Once they reach saturation, what looked like success starts to exhibit problems.

The trick is to increase your nutrient export for a long time. It took a while for things to saturate and will take a while to come back out. Try an algae scrubber, GFO, or my personal favorite, carbon dosing. Don't expect success right away. It takes time to pull all that gunk back out of your system. Be patient.

 

get a sea hare will help with the algae while you get the nutrients under control.

 

the algea above isn't like that. it's more of like the one in the pic below. where I got it from, it said that's it's hair algea but, I never seen it get that thick and not flow like hair. I may try an algae scrubber or just carbon dosing. how do those pre made algea scrubbers work? I forgot the name of the company but, they pretty much look like lil soap boxes with the tuff surface and red led lights inside it.

 

Looks like Bryopsis to me.Get some of this and raise mag. level to 1600.

As has been elequently stated by me fellow reefers the problem is nutrients.Any critter you add will just mask the problem.FWIW I had 6 fish in a 120 gallon system(1 tomini,3 chromis,barnacle blenny,mandarin) and still had to perform 20 gallon wc's weekly (along with gfo in a reactor).To keep the levels from building. Fighting algae is a marathon not a sprint.People get discouraged when there labor does not produce instant results.Reason #104 why overstocking is a bad idea.
