QT tank build help for ich/velvet/brooklynella?

Hey guys i had a velvet outbreak or brooklynella and killed my 2 clowns in jus 24hrs. I have 4 shrimps, a brittle star and few turbos in my tank. Iv heard that they too can carry diseas, but if left fishless, they parasite of velvet or ich or brook will die in 10weeks however im not gona add any fish for 12 weeks.
Iv read that rocks, inverts, corals, etc can carry these diseases. If thts the case then i guess all need to be in qt. So i guess all need a qt setup. For this reason.

Do i need to make 3 different setups for fish, corals and inverts? if yes then here are the issues i feel i might have to face.

1) for fish qt tank:

im plannin to keep my eheim hob sponge in the main tank all the time and then place it in the filter of qt tank when i get new fish. That way i get the bacteria from the main tank to cycle the qt before the arrival of new fish, N keep then for like 1.5mnths or 2. But if i treat the fish with any medicine, it can killoff all those bacteria and cause more stress to the fish i think.. please let me know if im wrong or right or how can i avoid this problem. And best way to setup a qt tank for fish.

2) inverts qt. Tank

As many say that inverts can also carry disease, do i need to qt them? Can i make a setup with some liverock rubble an internal or hob filter or just a tiny wavemaker? Leave them for like 2 mnths in qt.

3) corals qt. Tank

Well as ppl say that even rocks or corals can carry pores of ich or velvet, do i need to qt them too? Obviously for coral pests too. But im more concerned about fish pest. How shud i make qt tank for corals? i cant keep an extra chiller for them. Also what about hard corals? Its like maintaining a complete different system for them wich takes a lot of space which i don have. jus a light and a wavemaker would do?

# treating while acclimating.

Well iv heard from some people that qt can cause more harm to fish as there is almost 0 biological filteration. Rather can i treat fish with cupramine or paraguard while acclimating? After acclimation i can gine it a fresh tank water bath for 2 mints so there is almost no meds going into dt nor any parasite. Has any1 ever tried it?

As with corals, will lugols iodine help prevent parasites coming into dt?

 

you dont need multiple set ups just dont buy fish rocks and corals all at the same time but rather get one at a time. for example get a fish, QT, once the QT period over place in tank, clean/disinfect QT tank and start the process over with rocks or what have you.

theoretically even if inverts and corals may passively infect your system if you are QTing you will eventually break the parasites life cycle.... I would avoid having "sharing" equipment between DT and QT....it defeats the purpose.....

lighting will be the biggest PITA while youre QTing corals....

testing and water changes are your best bet in keeping parameters in check in QT tank....

with all this being said im someone who does not (wrongfully) QT anything, so take my advice lightly...I

 

Only fish carry fish diseases. Corals are QTed to prevent spreading coral diseases and parasites. Don't know anyone who QTs rocks or inverts.

 

Guys what i ment was since inverts can also carry ich from the lfs, can u qt them? And in tht qt setup, jus add sm rocks for the shrimp. Thise rocks will stay in qt only. Also for fish qt, what about the bioload, especially fishes like tangs. Will an hob and a bare bottom 20g tank with some large pvc pipe cuttings be enough for a fish qt?

Also will lugols iodine remove all the pests from the corals?

 

Parasites require host, a fish. Without fish the parasite will die. Yes they can come in on corals and inverts but without a host, they will die.

You don't need to remove your inverts, rocks or corals.

For future purchases you can set up qt to quarantee before adding to the display tank to prevent future issues.

Yes, that will suffice for a qt. The simpler, the better.

 

Kool, and what about biological filtration? coz if i add any meds, the bacteria will die. Will tht create any issue?

 

You can place a filter sponge into your DT's sump or HOB filter for 2 - 3 weeks and the bacteria will colonize on it. When you set up the QT, put the sponge into that HOB for instant bio-filtration.

There's some controversy concerning how resistant nitrifying bacteria really are to meds, including copper; seems some folks have had good luck at maintaining their bio-filter while medicating. However, I would still recommend checking your Ammonia level frequently, and be prepared for water changes. Having one or two batches already mixed would be a major plus in case of emergency. Of course once WCs are done to lower Ammonia, you'll need to readjust your med levels.

 

Kool.. since eheim makes those smart tray type sponges, can i jus place those tray sponges in the sump and then add them to hob when fish arrives? Also can i add just a few dead corals in qt to mainatain ph? They will never go to the maintank though.
