Bacteria IMO.Because of the stringy white you speak of. the temp drop to 77 wont hurt the fish so long as it came down over a period longer than 2 hours or so.

have you tested for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates? if not, DO SO NOW.

im gonna step out on a limb and guess this is a fairly new setup. those rocks are stark white.

It did get a tiny bit in the living room from blowing on it.. but nothing excessive.. why, could that have done something?

Its a couple months old now. I just blew all the rocks off two days ago with a turkey baster and that's why I had the lights off... that's why the rocks look white

As concerning as these issues are, I think that you will find that most of the advise given comes back to trying to keep things as stable as possible and making any changes slowly. When these issues arise, the immediate desire to "fix it now" is almost overwhelming. Making rapid changes in temperature, salinity or even catching the fish for QT can cause stress that is even more harmful and prevents them from fighting off what ails them. With your tank being only a few months old, battling algae issues etc, i would not consider it to be stable yet and still going through the "new tank syndrome." Regular water changes, good nutritious food and frequent parameter checks will be your best friend. Good luck and keep posting the status of your situation!

I just took this picture. Shows up better on the trigger but most guys look about the same. He is the only one with cloudy eyes. They looked much worse this morning.

yes, it definitely looks like ich. In terms of what you can do, I think you're going to need to feed well, keep tank parameters steady, and hope that they fight it off. It's very strange that they came up like this from just the small change you made (turned lights off). How deep is your sand bed?

I'm really puzzled myself. I was really happy over the last few weeks and thought I was doing great. they looked fantastic.
I still am not sure what the white stuff is on the surface of the water. When I turned my pumps off to feed just a little white ago it started accumulating again. It sticks to the cords and stuff that are near the surface. My sandbed is prob about 1 1/2" or so. The trigger did stir it up like crazy making some kind of a home yesterday, making a big pile about 4" in areas.
They are all eating well (Yellow Tang, 2 Ocellaris, 2 Green Chromis) except for the Niger. He is not eating at all.

perhaps the stirring of the sand could have contributed?

I thought of that.. also I blew all the rocks off with the turkey baster 2 days ago. But would that ever cause anything like this? Its a weird slimy stuff. It sort of breaks up once the pumps are on but still stays on the surface.. once the pumps are off it starts to look more like thin threads
