I bought a Nuvo 30 about a month ago. It is great. I went a little overboard.....here is my setup:

    30 Nuvo and stand
92 watt Innovative tablet light with night and dawn/dusk settings
Innovative mid-size protein skimmer (in place of one filter)
    Digital Aquatics Elite controller
    JBJ UV Sterilizer
1 Vortech MP10 (just ordered it)
2 part doser (controlled by DA Elite)
    40 lbs live rock
    Fine white sand
    4 Mexican turbo snails
    12 or so cerith snails
    25 or so blue legs
    15 or so red legs
    2 emerald crabs
    1 coral banded
    sand sifting star
    Hawk fish
    False perc
    Bi-color blenny
    2 Dwarf pink feather dusters
    Green star polyps
    Red chili
    Metallic green mushrooms
    Kenya tree
    Joker polyps
    Sun coral

I went from a good size reef that I had for 8 or so years to a super nano reef (4.5 g) to the 30 Nuvo. It's pretty cool. The fish and shrimp came from my 4.5 and they are happy as heck to have room to roam. Plus I am sure they like the stable parameters. Everything is starting to stabilize and nitrates are getting below 10 ppm. I'm excited as heck. When we moved into a super small place in DC I had to get rid of the reef, which killed me. Then when we moved back into a house my wife gave me permission to go crazy with the Nuvo.... so I did. I didn't really tell her how cra$y I went.

I'm wanting to get into hard corals. In the past I didn't have enough light to do it, but I think this new light I have is enough. I'm a little nervous though. It's a big jump from softies and polyps to hard stuff. Anyone have any tips for me? Once my nitrates get down to almost zero and I get my dosers completely worked out with testing, I am going to go to the LFS and get one hard coral. I've had really good luck with my soft corals, but for some reason I am convinced that I will be killing my first hard coral. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Ben

I'll have to take some pics tonight. We just moved. I have no furniture, but a cool tank at this point. I have a couple from my cell phone. The picture below is from about a month ago when I just set it up. Before the protein skimmer and such. This is also with the wrong light. They gave me a single spectrum light and I took it back. I'll take some pics tonight of my DA setup. I think it came out good.

I have a Nuvo Micro-30 that has been up and running for about 3 months. I have several fish and several soft corals, but so far, don't have a protein skimmer. What are you guys using? It looks like the "Ghost" mid-size skimmer was built for these tanks, but I have not read any positive reviews of this skimmer. Any suggestions? A lot of posts say that they wouldn't use a skimmer for a 30 gallon reef tank, but most say that they wouldn't run any size tank without a skinner. My local aquatics store has been trying to find me a skimmer that will fit in this tank, but so far have not come up with anything. Looking forward to hearing from other new hobbyists using these tanks. I love the way it looks! It's the perfect size for my space, and so far, my fish, shrimp and corals seem happy and healthy (although my leather toad stool hasn't opened up for the past couple of days??).

Have you gone to MarineDepot.com and looked at their Nano Skimmer Section? I would start there since they have a good selection and reviews of the products.

Tunze has a new Nano Skimmer out. JBJ also has a skimmer rated for their 40 gallon, 30 gallon and 20 gallon AIO tanks. You'll have to look at the dimensions for each product.

If you're going to stock on the heavy side a skimmer is a good idea, if you're going to move into keeping sps then again a skimmer is an excellent addition. You can however maintain a 30 gallon with routine water changes and no skimmer.

    Welcome to 3reef.

Perhaps start your own build thread to show off your tank.

    :)

Wife has the 38 and we use the innovative skimmer. I have no complains. It pulls crap from the tank with 3 fish and heavy corals. 5gl WC done each week. There are plenty of other Nuvo owners so hopefully they chime in with what they use.

Wow! Thanks so much for the tips!! I went to MarineDepot and saw a couple of skimmers that might work, but will have to check with my "advisors" at Rift 2 Reef in Fliwer Mound, TX. I kind of bought this tank on a whim. They had it set up with the rocks and a couple clowns in it, and it was the perfect size for the book cases in my family room. I got them to come out and set it up for me, and don't add anything without their input. With the advent of some corals in the tank, I also purchased my new favorite toy... a Maxspect Gyre 130. Probably a little overkill in my small tank, but the fish and coral seem to love it! If anyone else is running a Gyre in a small tank, I'd love to know your thoughts on placement, settings, etc. Mine is about 5" below the water level, horizontal on the side glass. I'm running it at about 40% power, in the pulse mode, at the shortest pulse interval.
