I'm glad you found some solutions to your woes!
You said a ribbed 'cone'? A barbed fitting maybe? Cones tend to get pretty small.

For me, really 2 areas that will make flow noise.
    - the intank part: here I use media bags in the top shelf with some GAC and some PhosGuard in them, and it keeps the flow sound real quiet.
    - the hose going into the sump, especially since it does have some air bubbles in it also: If this is a problem area- Google 'reverse durso'- that will take care of that area.

Good luck my friend- of whom I am so envious of b/c you live in Japan!
    Keep us posted.

    Yes, barbed fitting.
found gutter cover stuff today and wrapped the intake cup with it which created better flow but that increased noise cause water level is no longer staying at the bottom of the cup. NOW when I turn it up it is doing the rush to catch siphon thing again but with this house it shouldn't be doing that..
anyway I have a bag of carbon on my shelf to alleviate some noise.

    Thanks Mike!

I actually just sort of modified a few things I picked up from a few other threads, and my DIY HOB INtank overflow is still working flawlessly on my current 125 Reef.

I now have a DC12000 RP, with a 1.5in return and 10ft of head flowing at least 750gph+ thru mine.

Here's a recent shot with my newer LED's
