Hiiiii, I'm new this forum. So hello everyone!!!!

So I have gotten a new "used" 29 gallon tank today. Super excited to get started. The tank was my father-in-law's and he didn't keep up with it. It looked like crap. I just clean and scrubbed the crap out of it with vinegar. Now do i have to wait to put in my sand and water? It came with 2 filters not sure what size yet. The filters are disgusting and so is the hood cover for the tank. That's going to be tomorrow's mission. And also I went to Walmart and couldn't find any good ammonia to get the cycle started quickly (I heard if you shook the bottle and it bubbled and stayed not to get). Is there another way to get this bad boy going? Thanks in advance for the info!

P.S. I got black aquarium sand from Petco. I plan on putting a group of Salt & Pepper Cory and a Pitbull Pleco. If anybody else knows any other good compatible fish, I would like to know. THANK YOU! :*

    Hey welcome Kalene,

Start googling images of biocubes, look at the back compartments, you'll eventually starting seeing the layout. Skimmer, Carbon, ATO, Mechanical Filtration. If you have not been in the hobby previously it can be a tad overwhelming.

Are you able to provide any images, that always helps immensely. The filters you speak of can you be more specific or post an image.

Sounds like you have been doing your home work already, I think you'll love the hobby with that kind of enthusiasm.

Welcome! As for starting the cycle, many people use a raw cocktail shrimp, however it appears as if you are going to be doing fresh water?? If so, perhaps someone else could chime in as to what to use. Im sure that any type of raw fish that would break down would start things off.

Oh yes, I'm fairly new. Started fish keeping about a month ago but it's very interesting. I've researched a lot already. I will post up pics a little but later. I'm moving things around right now to see where I can put the 29 gallon.

Freshwater fish to cycle, a gold old fashioned goldfish! Asl ong as your tap water is hard you will be ok, ammonia becoems less and less toxic as the pH goes down. For us SW people with a pH of over 8 ammonia in any concentration is lethal, but if youre working between 6-7 youll be ok.
