This is Monty our big leaf turtle. He rules. ;D

I made his beach with eggcrate, plastic window-screening, with a pump and heater inside it accessible at one corner. The return goes through a hole in the egg-crate and spreads over a eclipse filter packed with carbon that has floss over it and wrapped in window screening.

He used to have just a brick.

Hah! My turtle ran away as well. id only had it for a week, and id saved for the equipment for a year. i put it in the pond for a vacation from its tank, and went inside and when i came out it was gone.

a lot of times turtles run away because if caught in the wild they will sped their whole life trying to find their home... kinda sad

How cool! We had a reef turtle when I was a kid, we had him about 10 years. He was the sweetest thing. He would sit on a rock and watch the guppies swim by and grab them and suck them down!

I LOVE turtles and have wanted to keep one as a pet but couldn't figure out how to keep the water clean. Your set-up looks like the plan. Are those fish for him to eat? I read that some people feed their turtles in a separate container so the wasted food doesn't foul the water. Do you feed him that way? When I worked at a vet clinic, someone found an injured snapping turtle alongside the road with a broken jaw. The doctor wired the jaw and we kept him in a big Rubbermaid tub to heal. It was my job to tube-feed him in the morning. (the turtle rescue people told me how to do it) He'd rear up on his side and try to bite me. And the smell of this turtle was unbelievable. I was so relieved after a week of caring for him that he died....for his sake and mine. I still really like turtles though :) and hope to have one someday. Kas

I will work on some pictures for you but here is the decription of our set up.
Six foot long Oak stand that used to hold our 125 gal reef now has two 40 gal tanks on it. Each tank has a piece of glass that I siliconed in so that about 5 gal of sand is divided from 15 gal of water. Each tank has a Marineland Magnum 350 filter that does a great job of keeping things clean. We used to take the turles (9 of them) out of their tank to feed them in order to limit extra food in the tank and the fact that turles usually defecate right after they eat. Since getting the Magnum 350's though we feed the turtles in the tank and things are fine.
