I was curious as to anyone else who might have tried these little guys in a tank and what they have seen. Right now I have 3 mussels in mine and they are alive and thriving. Not much to look at, but I like watching different organisms go to work as they do their thing.

I've never tried to keep oysters, but they will most likely require frequent feedings. IIRC, they rely on particulate matter, such as plankton, as well as DOCs for their nutritional needs.

    Good luck! :)

Those are mussels not oysters. They will sit there and filter feed. Nothing more, nothing less.

I looked into these before. The downside to them is most are from colder water climates, so thier lifespan is much shortened in our tanks.

Thanks for the id, They're all kind of the same when ya first look at em.
Well, these are Florida creatures, a bit used to the hot waters so I hope they do good, so far still alive, the most they've done so far is throw out these little redish tentacles and attach themselves to the near rock surface. Nothing like one of those electric clams or anything, but it's a step in the right direction.

No movement whatsoever, once they upright themselves with the red tentacles, they stay in that position. Xmetalfan99 had it right on, no more no less, but I have to give it to their ability to filter feed, that is what they do best, just like having a feather duster in the tank, just with out the "WOW".

As stated those are mussels. But because this is called "oysters" in an aquarium I will comment on them as well..

Oysters shouldn't be put in our aquariums because they go sexual pretty often and will milk the water up when they release there eggs. Tried to do a local only tank a few years ago and ended up just going with oyster shells instead of oysters. (I'm from the Mississippi gulf coast)

I have a question about this. I have a ton of SPS in my tank and I feed oyster ovarian tissue/ spawn stuff 3 times a week. I have a 150 gallon tank and thinking that having a couple "sexual" oysters in my fuge may be a great way to feed my coral. So how often did they milk up the water? And how bad was it? I have a huge skimmer and vodka/mb7 dose.. I kinda love the idea of my tank feeding itself instead of me feeding it.

So if I follow you correctly, you're saying that "Oysters" will milk up the water every so often, but you have not seen that behavior with mussels? or at least haven't heard of them doing this....
