I know it's old but new for me. I have a 125 reef tank for last 6 years. It's mixed reef with fish. I always quarantine new fish but newer actually did hypo or copper treatment. I did not see need for it. Fishes were happy and fat. After 4 weeks I put them in my DT. First time now I see they have ICH <ICK>. So I have to tear up my reef and try to catch them. As I keep reading looks like copper is more effective then hypo. Yes, I know there's many opinions. I don't want to screw up, please help me. I know I have to leave display fishless for 10 weeks. I have 75 gal. tank I will use it for for QT. I have 2 HOB filters with bio wheel. Using copper all that colonized bacteria will die so only water changes can keep low nutritiens, right? Any better idea? Ammo lock? Please let me know. And the most important. I read that Cupramine from Sachem is the best copper. And Salifert test kit. Is that right? I hope it says what level of cupramine should I keep. If you guys agree I will buy this at Drs.fostersmith.com. They have those. Please let me know. Thank you. So depressed...:( Thanks.

Slow down, just because you see ich isn't any need to immediately tear anything down. When fish become lethargic or absolutely covered is when emergency action like hypo or copper needs to take place. What fish are in the tank? Copper will kill any and all corals and invertebrates, not just the bio.

My main is 125. I have 75 as QT. 75 is all empty just water and PVC pipes. Bio wheels are in my main sump. Im keeping them there in case of emergency. I have Hippo, Powder and Yellow Tangs, 3 Bangai Cardinals, 3 Wrasses and Maroon Clown.. All fishes acting normally, just have some white spots. I know its ich. Im just trying to get information and be ready when I had to do that...

6 years reefing, always quarantine fishes. Does quarantine means using hypo or copper? No. I observed them in QT and if they were ok and they were after 4 weeks they went to DT. My long story lost you I guess...

wow, that is a gorgeous tank! I wouldn't jump right to tearing apart the tank to catch the fish - that will also cause more stress for the fish. Many people have had success in feeding a good variety of food (some soaked in garlic or selcon) to increase the appeal of the food and healthy fish can sometimes fight off the infection. I'd go this route first. Just my .02.

You are correct in that the only way to eradicate the ich from you DT is to have it go fishless for 8-12 weeks from all that I've read. I've never personally done that though.

Thanks.Maybe that was a good recipe. All that time I feed them frozen Rod's Food, Mysis soaked in Garlic Extreme,Selcon and Zoe. Eveyday also salad and Nori. Tangs and also Wrase's loves it. Something had to change but I can't figure out what. Also its not extreme just few spots. All fishes act normal. Im just trying to gather more information how to do right copper medication in case I had to do it...

I'll let others chime in on the correct medication. Here's to hoping you don't need to go that route. Bump for your question!

+1 oldfishkeeper. Great tank. A good diet may help you ride this out. Pulling everything apart after 6 years may release more nasties then the cure.
