From what I have seen, the intermediate can only support low light corals such as most softies. The advanced is plenty enough light for all corals, but can be hard to get some corals acclimated since you can't dim them.

I have my new JBJ Nano 28 Quad on the way but I'm wondering if the stock filter media is going to work for me or if I should switch it out to something else? I really don't want to do a refugium just yet because I'm new to reef tanks and don't want to try to many new things all at once. I saw a clip on you tube by a guy called reefthuz it was a simple filter mod for a Bio Cube 29 wondering if this mod would work in my Nano? Any help or links to filter mods would be awesome... BTW I love this thread I've read thru almost every post loads of good info!

Here is my list of what I have coming for my tank

    28 gallon CF-Quad Nano w/ stand
JBJ Nano Protein Skimmer (old school I know But I Had 600 dollar budget for this project)
    100w Jager Thermostat Heater
    1 Korlia 425 power head
    Instant ocean Hydrometer
    Digital thermometer
    API Master Test Kit

    50 Gallon Reef Crystals
    20 pounds of reef sand
    20 Pounds of Dry Rock
    10 Pounds Premium Fiji LR
    16 oz PurpleUp

    Congratulations!!!

Look at the InTank media baskets. They go in the center chamber, floss or foam on top (to catch suspended particles), charcoal next (personally I like Chemipure) and Purgien underneath.

This may hinder your skimmer placement and you can use the media basket that comes with the tank.

Thanks your for the kind words regarding the thread, I am glad you found it of assistance. :)

There are two school of thought regarding running lights when cycling.

    1. Hobbyist do not run the lights in hopes of diminishing the serverity of the initial algae blooms.
    2. Hobbyist like myself that love to see even an non-stocked tank run the lights during the cycle to see the development of hitch-hikers that come in on the live rock.

No is no real right way or wrong way.

    Mods

I've run the 28g JBJ intermediate LED tank for about 3 months now. I started with an Aqueon Evolve 8 that I made some great mods to, but moved to this tank on New Years. The mods that I've made are minor and as follows:

    Filter Media
    • Basket:
      • Top Chamber: Stock Foam and Purigen
      • Middle Chamber: Chaeto
      • Bottom Chamber: Chaeto
    • Beneath the Basket:
      • Chemipure
    Pumps:
    • Replaced stock pumps with maxi-jet 900s (much quieter)
    • Added two Hydor koralia nano 240s - and placed those on the wavemaker (these were much quieter than the submersibles turning on and off and give the perfect current
    Lighting:
    • Finnex Fugeray-R Ultra Slim Aquarium LED Light Fixture -- clipped onto back of the aquarium stand aiming at the chaeto -- chaeto is growing like crazy
    Heating:
    • Aquatop GH150 Aquarium Submersible Glass Heater, 150-Watt
    Inhabitants:
    Fish:
    2 Ocellaris Clownfish
    3 Blue/Green Reef Chromis
    1 Six Line Wrasse
    1 Diamond Watchman Goby
    1 Red Scooter Dragonet
    1 Tail Spot Blenny
    1 Yellow Watchman Goby
    1 Yellow Wrasse

Corals (Assorted frags...the only that have died upon entry were the frogspawn and hammer):

    2 Assorted Zoas
6 Assorted Mushrooms (Blue Mushroom, Elephant Ear, green Mushroom, 2 Hairy Mushroom, Red Mushroom)
    1 Button Polyp,
    2 Duncans
    1 Flower Pot
    1 Clove Polyp
    4 Green Star Polyp
    2 Toadstool Mushroom Leather
    1 Pipe Organ
    3 Pulsating Xenia
    1 Purple Ribbon Gorgonian
    2 Galaxea
    1 Torch Coral
    1 Trumpet Coral
    1 Yellow Parazoanthus

    Inverts:
Assorted Snails (Astraea, Cerith, Fighting Conch, Nerite, Turbo)
    Assorted Dwarf Hermit Crabs
    2 Emerald Crab
    3 Peppermint Shrimp
    1 Red Line Cleaner Shrimp
    1 Sand Sifting Sea Star
and tons of hitchhiker tube worms

Tried a Sebae anemone, but he was eating everyone in the tank -- 2 firefish, 2 peppermint shrimp, and a chromis -- all too dumb to stay away from it.

now leaning toward salt again. Back in 2009 I had one the nano tuners 28gal jbj with actinics and the hqi. LED was just really getting on the scene then.

I loved my all in one.. ive been checking out the newer LED models specifically the 89 watt. Which is what has brought me to this thread. I need to start reading through all the pages... just saying hi and tipping a toe into the pool.
