    Here is the story.
I had not one issue with it when I was running my two 175 MH 14k lights.
I switched to my T5s with brand new Guissmen bulbs about 8 hours per day (14k, 10k, Pure Actinic, 14K) and about a month or so later hair algae started growing everywhere. I cut back to just two bulbs and it still grew.. also tried cutting hours back.. still grew.
I have been using RO/Di water since the start, and all water changes are the same. Parameters are fine, but I bought some phosphate remover and ran that, and cut my light down to just this simple little led strip for about a month. Also did two 20% water changes and bought new DI and filters. SO.. it basically was gone about a week ago. Then I started running just two of my T5 lights again about 8 hours. Corals all started perking up nice....but as of two or three days ago the hair algae is starting to cover ALL liverock again!
Please help. I just don't understand the problem.
I'm very tempted to put the MH lights back on and see what happens.

I used to have a 55g with pc lighting and then I upgraded to t5 ho. I had some hair algae issues but it wasn't just the lights, they just aided the growth. I find anytime you change the lighting, I get an algae bloom.

How often are you changing your filter floss, do you vacuum your substrate, what are your nitrate levels at. Are the bulbs new in your light?

My issue was not changing my floss often enough, how much I was feeding, and adding zooplankton and phytoplankton.
I changed my floss min 1 time a week, fed less, cut how often I added the planktons, and I manually removed the hair algae.

Changing bulbs shouldnt create hair algae if done correctly. I would increase water changes.

Thanks. I try to vaccum substrate a little on most water changes, but I have a niger trigger that digs it up an sifts it a lot so it really doesnt hold much waste.
I don't run any filter floss, just a sponge pre filter on my overflow and I clean that weekly. The bulbs are basically brand new a couple months ago, right before I started getting the hair
    Nitrate is around 15-20 usually.

I do a 20% usually once a month, although I have skipped before and never had a problem until the T5s.

    Get this down.

Increase to smaller more frequent water changes (like once a week)

Nutrients feed algae. Nutrients build up over time. Fish like triggers make the problem worse. If you don't want nuisance algaes the answer is a simple one.Lower your bioload and/or increase nutrient removal.

Has anyone ever had luck letting this stuff sort of run its course and dye off?

My bio load is tiny. I have 1 percula clown, 1 green chromis, 1 yellow tang, and 1 niger trigger in a 90 with 100lbs of LR and a 20 gallon sump, huge skimmer, and LR in the sump as well.

Nitrates are actually more between 0-5 now, before the last two water changes they were around 15-20. The last water change was about 2 weeks ago and the one before was about 3 weeks before that. about 20% each time.
