So I retested and you all were right cal. 480 ppm, pH 8.2, Alk 9.5 dkh, ammonia 0, nitrite 0 and nitrates 10ppm. I need a mag test kit. Will get that tomorrow. Guess my test tube might have been durty?

More like some degree of human error, I've done this before.

So my calcium is back on the rise. Now my alkalinity is fine 8 dkh and my pH is 8.0, a little lower than I like. I haven't bought a magnesium test kit. Reason why was a guy at the fish store told me that mag and cal go together, mag 3x more concentrated. But my question is if that's the case why does my calcium creep up after about a week and a half? Again newbie trying to learn.... thanks

Again, assuming no human error, it has to be something that you're adding to the tank.

Assuming a stable environment mag and calc generally are at a 3:1 ration, however it's normally not exact.

What are you putting in your tank currently?

You really need an accurate test kit. Red sea, salifert are affordable and way better than API. If your not adding anything then calcium won't raise. Supplements or water changes are the only thing that will raise your calcium.

I will get a better kit, I'm truly tired of the inaccurate readings..... do you believe I need a magnesium kit as well?

    Yes, magnesium is important.
