Hair algae gone wild

any updates so far?

 

yes, i have added a tuxedo urchin,turbo snail that has been in there for a week now and looks fine, and 4 for scarlet crabs. i want to add more turbos but i will do so slowly to make sure they are doing ok. the algae really has not changed much. i am going to do a water change tomorrow and vac some more out. seems to be loose on the rocks. i changed my led light which only had blue leds working on the one side. added the reefbreeders value fixture and so far i like it.

 

what species of sea hare would be best ? my lfs offers several on their website.

 

just got a medium size blunt end sea hare today. he seems excited to see all that hair algae !

 

I was just thinking about getting a sea hare because I have hair algae starting to sprout. My lawnmower doesn't put a dent in it. My LFS actually rents them out. Lol.

 

Look into a algae scrubber I think I'm getting one soon.

my sea hare has been in for a week now. he has ate some of the hair algae but not as much as i thought he would. i now have 10 scarlet, one turbo, tuxedo urchin and the sea hare. going to vac some algae out this morning. some of it seems to be getting white on its outer parts. what does this mean ?

I'd be going Ninja on the Sh!!t! Nuke the rocks- the H2O2 sounds like a good idea.
Go ape, go nuclear on that stuff, get it the H*!! outa there!

Maybe I missed it, what type of flitering do you have? The fule for the problem could be there.

Go Dark, stop feeding, etc., etc.,
And when it's gone and you see even a hair of it, nuke it again!

BTW- what are you Ca+ and Alk? those actually play a rome as well.
I know form personal experience that when those are low, my cyano wants to start up again also.

I think this has been months, right? Well, thats too long! ;-)

Any cannisters? sponges?, filter socks/bags? What?

 

I have been fighting it also, a few weeks ago I got some chaeto & shaving brush tree to soak up any nitrates from when the hair dies. I pull out hair 1-2 times a week also. I feed my tank very little food. It's slowing down the growth. Good luck.
